Can a computer want to create art? The ‘Painting Fool’ might. It’s an AI that paints portraits of people but only when it’s in a good mood and so feels like it. When not painting, it spends its time reading the newspaper. When you sit to have your portrait painted, then if it has been reading up-beat stories it will happily paint your portrait. If you’re unlucky though, and the stories it is reading are miserable, it will send you packing with a miserable quote from a miserable article. It will suggest you come back later, when it might be in a better mood. It’s part of an experiment to see if people can accept the idea that a computer program could intend to do things of its own accord.
Clever critterness… only paint when they feel like it.
